Baseball Loses a Pair at LMU
HARROGATE, Tenn. - On Saturday afternoon, the Lincoln Memorial University baseball team took the first two games of their three-game series against the Lions of Mars Hill College, 15-3 and 10-3. With the two wins, the Railsplitters move to 14-11 overall and 6-5 in South Atlantic Conference play. MHC fell to 10-15 overall and 4-7 in the league.
Game 1: LMU 15, MHC 3
After playing to a one-run stalemate in the first
inning, Lincoln Memorial would score three runs in the second
inning and take a 4-1 lead. A homerun by Gelson Perez in the third
and a single by Cody Pack in the fourth gave the Railsplitters a
6-1 advantage. In the fifth inning, Deaun Williams hit a two-run
homerun to go along with Nolan Woody's solo-homerun, adding to
Lincoln Memorial's lead.
The Lions would score a run in the fifth and sixth innings, however, that would be the only offensive output of the game for Mars Hill. In the eighth inning, the Railsplitters would put the game out of reach with a five-run outburst. They would go on to win the game, 15-3.
Austin Johnson would provide a solid outing for Lincoln Memorial, as he pitch five and two-thirds of an inning and allowed two earned runs. Steven Starbird and Brad Pressley were strong in relief, as they shut out the Lions in the final innings of game one. Gelson Perez and Deaun Williams each went 3-4 in the game. Williams recorded a game-high three RBIs in the contest.
Michael Bueker led MHC at the plate going 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Rusty Smith and Brandon King posted two hits apiece. Kyle Dietrich took the loss (1-1) for MHC on the mound.
Game 2: LMU 10, MHC 3
In game two, the Railsplitters jumped out quickly, as
they exploded for five runs in the first inning of play. Gelson
Perez provided the big swing of the inning with a two-run homerun.
However, Mars Hill would notch a scoring inning of their own in the
top half of the second as they pieced together three runs.
After scoreless third and fourth innings, the Railsplitters were able to break open the game with another five-run inning in their half of the fifth. A two-RBI triple by Deaun Williams served as the catalyst for the offensive outburst in that inning. LMU would shutdown the Lions in the concluding innings, and win the game, 10-3.
Andy Fennell threw seven innings and allowed three earned runs. With the win, Fennell moves to 2-1 on the season. Gelson Perez was 3-4 in the game with three RBIs. Deaun Williams was once again strong, as he went 2-3 with two RBIs.
Michael Brittian led MHC offensively in game two with two hits, a double and a run scored. Greg Smith took the loss (1-2) on the mound for the Lions.
The teams will conclude the three-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m. at
Hennon Field.
